The Peoples Democratic Party has condemned a bomb explosion at a mosque in Maiduguri, Borno State, on Wednesday evening, accusing President Bola Tinubu’s administration of failing to protect Nigerian citizens. The opposition party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, described the incident as unacceptable and called for immediate action beyond political rhetoric. The attack occurred during evening prayers at Gamboru Market.
“The news of an explosion at a mosque in Gamboru Market, Maiduguri, is another sad reminder of the rising insecurity that has become the unfortunate contemporary reality Nigerians face,” the party said. “This is totally unacceptable. The irreducible minimum the government should offer its people is the protection of lives and property. This administration has failed woefully in this respect and should rise to the occasion rather than resort to rhetoric and playing politics with security,” the statement added.
Suspected Boko Haram insurgents detonated an improvised explosive device at the Juma’at Mosque around 6:10 p.m. Wednesday, less than 12 hours before Christmas, as worshippers observed Maghrib prayers. Police spokesman ASP Nahum Daso confirmed five deaths and approximately 35 injuries from preliminary investigations. The PDP warned that continued attacks on worship places threaten constitutional rights and religious freedom across Nigeria.
