Oworonshoki residents left homeless and hopeless amid ongoing demolitions

More residents of Oworonshoki in Kosofe LGA, Lagos, have been displaced following fresh demolitions by the Lagos Task Force. Officers reportedly arrived early Tuesday with at least six bulldozers and demolished houses without prior warning. Residents blamed Oba Saliu Babatunde Saliu, the King of Oworonshoki, for allegedly facilitating the exercise, which has been ongoing since September.

Michael, a resident, said he lost his home in November when it was set ablaze. “When they came, I could only salvage my documents and school certificates. Every other thing I had like my furniture, TV sets were all destroyed in the fire and I was forced back to square one,” he lamented. A septuagenarian added that six of her properties were lost.

FIJ previously reported that demolitions in September destroyed homes and a church, with police using tear gas and gunfire to disperse residents. Many, including the elderly and new homeowners, were left confused and distraught as their properties were destroyed in ongoing forced evictions.
