‘No strained ties’: Fintiri explains political split from Atiku after APC defection

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has clarified that his political separation from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is strictly due to differing party alignments and his support for a southern presidency in 2027.

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has opened up on the reasons behind his political departure from his long-time ally and former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar. Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, the Governor explained that their split was necessitated by differing views on party alignment and the 2027 power-sharing formula. Fintiri, who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), argued that for the sake of national unity and fairness, the presidency should remain in the South for two terms, a stance that directly conflicts with Atiku’s reported presidential ambitions under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Despite the political realignment, the Governor maintained that his personal rapport with the former Vice President remains intact and respectful. He dismissed speculations of a bitter rift, emphasizing that political disagreements do not equate to personal enmity in his approach to governance. According to him, those genuinely committed to Nigeria’s progress must recognize one another as partners in nation-building. “There is no strained communication with the former VP as a result of political differences. I still have; there is nothing that has gone bad. It is just that everybody has taken their political ways. I am today in APC, they are in another party,” Fintiri stated.

The Governor’s remarks come on the heels of the resignation of the former Vice President’s son, Adamu Atiku Abubakar, from the Adamawa State cabinet as Commissioner for Works and Energy Development. Fintiri noted that the exit was a mutual understanding to allow the younger Abubakar to align with his father’s political trajectory. Reaffirming his commitment to President Bola Tinubu’s administration, Fintiri concluded that the North has “no business” contesting the 2027 presidency, insisting that the rotation of power is a necessary stabilizing force for the Nigerian federation.
