Many Nigerians are expected to experience electricity outages during the Christmas period following a nationwide drop in power supply. The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) confirmed that the disruption would last for at least another 24 to 48 hours, affecting power availability across several parts of the country.
NISO attributed the situation to a recent explosion on the Escravos–Lagos Gas Pipeline, which disrupted gas supply to multiple power plants and led to reduced electricity generation. In a statement on Tuesday, the agency said it was monitoring repair works being carried out by the Nigerian Gas Processing and Transportation Company.
According to NISO, restoration efforts are progressing, with the pipeline expected to be fully operational within 24 to 48 hours. “This explosion caused a significant drop in electricity generation. It is expected that the vandalized pipeline will be fully operational within the next 24–48 hours,” the agency said, assuring Nigerians of gradual power restoration.
