Nigeria to acquire emergency helicopters for healthcare response system

Nigeria is advancing its emergency medical infrastructure through a new partnership with Airbus to procure specialized helicopters for a nationwide integrated ground-to-air response system.

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, initiated high-level negotiations with Airbus in France this Tuesday to procure emergency care helicopters, a move formally approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. As part of a strategic drive to establish an Integrated National Ground-to-Air Health Emergency Management System, Prof. Pate inspected a specialized air ambulance in Lyon, asserting that “this emergency Helicopters is to strengthen Nigeria healthcare response system.”

The initiative aims to modernize Nigeria’s medical infrastructure by integrating air and ground services to ensure timely evacuations, particularly in hard-to-reach areas, and to reduce mortality rates linked to delayed critical care. Government officials described the partnership as a “major step” toward aligning the nation’s emergency preparedness with global best practices, emphasizing that “people want peace” and a resilient health system capable of responding to disasters nationwide.
