‘Nigeria should consider two-party system’

APC chieftain Engr. Gbenga Akinwande says Ogun West is set to produce Ogun State’s next governor in 2027 while warning that Nigeria’s democracy is weakened by the absence of a strong opposition.

Engr. Gbenga Akinwande (PhD), a scholar and chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), says Ogun West is poised to produce the next governor of Ogun State in 2027. “My position on this is clear. I am from Ogun West, and the zone has never been given the opportunity to produce the governor of Ogun State,” he said, commending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Aremo Olusegun Osoba, and Governor Dapo Abiodun for supporting the zoning arrangement.

He attributed the zone’s past inability to produce a governor to internal divisions but said unity among traditional rulers has changed the narrative. Akinwande praised the leadership of the Olu of Ilaro and Paramount Ruler of Yewaland, Oba (Dr.) Kehinde Olugbenle, and the Olota of Ota, Oba (Prof.) Adeyemi Obalanlege, noting that their collaboration has strengthened cohesion across Ogun West.

On national politics, Akinwande warned that the dominance of the APC without a strong opposition poses a risk to Nigeria’s democracy. Reflecting on his failed bid for the Yewa North Local Government chairmanship, he defended his legal challenge to the 2024 APC primaries, stating, “The court is an integral part of our democratic process,” though he later withdrew the case following appeals from family and traditional leaders.
