The Nigerian Army’s 23 Brigade has denied allegations that soldiers killed women during a communal clash in Lamurde Local Government Area of Adamawa State, insisting the victims died from militia gunfire.
In a statement posted on X, the Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Capt. Olusegun Abidoye, described the claims as “baseless and misleading,” saying “neither the Brigade Commander nor his escorts were at the scene,” as the commander was attending a virtual operational briefing.
The Brigade said joint security forces responded to violence between Bachama and Chobo communities, deploying to troubled areas to restore calm. It stated troops received distress calls around 1:35 a.m., came under militia attack, and “neutralised three gunmen.”
The Army maintained that “no civilians were shot by Army personnel,” adding that the two women “were reportedly killed due to the unprofessional handling of weapons by the militias.”
