Former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), spent Monday night in EFCC custody after investigators intensified questioning into high-profile financial dealings linked to his tenure. Sources said he sought two permanent secretaries as sureties to meet bail conditions after arriving late for interrogation. Malami was previously questioned on November 29, where he stated, “The engagement was successful… as the truth relating to the fabricated allegations against me continue to unfold.”
The probe reportedly centres on at least 46 bank accounts and several controversial transactions, including the $496 million Global Steel payment, alleged irregularities in asset sales, and disputes over Paris Club refund fees and Abacha loot recovery. EFCC sources say the investigation revisits deals under former President Buhari’s administration, even as Malami pursues his 2027 Kebbi governorship bid following his defection to ADC.
