Murtala Muhammed International Airport has been ranked among Africa’s top 10 airports as Nigeria plans a ₦712 billion upgrade to boost capacity and efficiency.
Murtala Muhammed International Airport has been ranked among Africa’s top 10 airports, reflecting its status as Nigeria’s busiest aviation hub and key international gateway. The Lagos-based airport connects passengers to major destinations across Africa, Europe, and North America, with separate international and domestic terminals sharing the same runways.
The Federal Government has approved a ₦712 billion modernization project for the facility, aimed at upgrading infrastructure and improving passenger experience. The project includes rehabilitation of Terminal 1, expansion of Terminal 2, improved road networks, and new connecting facilities, alongside a temporary departure hall to ensure smooth operations during construction.
Other airports featured in the ranking include Cairo International Airport, O. R. Tambo International Airport, Addis Ababa Bole International Airport and Cape Town International Airport. The upgrades at MMIA are expected to strengthen its role in Nigeria’s aviation, business and tourism sectors while enhancing its capacity to handle growing passenger traffic.
