Lagos Police launch probe into viral video of officer assaulted over theft claim

The Lagos State Police Command has opened an investigation into a viral video showing a uniformed officer being assaulted by a mob over an alleged theft.

The footage, which surfaced on Wednesday, shows the officer bleeding from the mouth as a crowd surrounds him, repeatedly accusing him of stealing while onlookers record the incident.

Another officer was seen attempting to rescue the distressed policeman as the crowd chanted “Ole!” amid slow-moving traffic at what appeared to be a busy Lagos location. Police spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi said the command is working to establish the circumstances and confirm the officer’s identity, noting that updates will be provided.

The police again warned against mob justice, recalling a recent case in Plateau State where 18 people were arrested over the killing of an officer in a mob attack.
