The Lagos State Police Command has clarified that a police officer beaten in a viral video was performing official duties and was wrongly accused of theft.
The incident occurred along Brown Street, Oshodi, when the officer, attached to the state taskforce, was enforcing a ban on illegal parking. The confrontation escalated after a motorist resisted being stopped, causing the officer to accidentally discharge his firearm, which struck debris near bystanders.
Police spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi confirmed that the officer sustained injuries from the mob attack. Thirteen suspects involved in the assault, including men and women aged 22 to 40, have been arrested and are in custody pending prosecution.
The officer has faced internal disciplinary measures for unprofessional conduct during the incident, and authorities urged the public to avoid spreading misleading narratives about the event.
