Lagos begins installation of 22,000 solar streetlights

The Lagos State Government has commenced installing over 22,000 solar-powered streetlights through its Light Up Lagos Solar Streetlight Initiative. The Lagos State Electrification Agency (LSEA) is implementing the project, which is supervised by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. The goal is enhancing night-time safety, visibility, and energy sustainability across the state.

The shift to solar lighting follows decades of expensive, unreliable, and environmentally harmful grid and diesel-powered public lighting. LSEA General Manager, Kamaldeen Balogun, said, “This project reflects Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to building a cleaner, greener, and safer Lagos.” The Ministry provides policy oversight to ensure the project aligns with long-term renewable energy plans.

Installations are complete on major corridors, including Eko Bridge, Governor’s Road, and Lekki–Ikoyi Link Bridge. Work is ongoing on Ikorodu Road and the Gbagada–Oshodi Expressway, among others. The LSEA conducts the phased rollout and execution solely with in-house staff, ensuring quality control and systematic coverage across all communities.
