Katsina Assembly backs speedy passage of special seats for women bill

Katsina lawmakers have pledged to fast-track the Special Seats for Women Bill following pressure from advocacy groups seeking greater female representation in politics.

The Katsina State House of Assembly has pledged support for the speedy passage of the Special Seats for Women Bill, following a protest by women’s groups at the Assembly complex. Speaker Nasiru Daura gave the assurance while receiving a petition led by International Federation of Women Lawyers, urging lawmakers to prioritise the legislation.

The groups argued that women remain significantly underrepresented in Nigeria’s political system, holding less than five per cent of elective positions despite their contributions to national development. They noted that the proposed bill seeks to create additional legislative seats for women, similar to systems adopted in countries like Rwanda and South Africa to boost inclusion.

Responding, Daura commended women’s role in nation-building and assured that the Assembly would give the bill urgent attention. He expressed optimism that the legislation would secure the required support and be passed for assent, while stakeholders called for swift action to address gender imbalance in governance.
