Kano Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has accused his former deputy, Aminu Abdussalam, of attempting to remove him from office while defending his own exit from the NNPP as necessary to protect the interests of the state.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has alleged that his former deputy, Aminu Abdussalam, attempted to remove him from office and take over his position. Yusuf made the claim on Thursday while hosting a group of praise singers, Mawallafan Abba Gida Gida, at the Government House in Kano, stating that he had yet to receive Abdussalam’s resignation letter and insisting his administration did not offend him.
The governor said the former deputy’s actions were driven by ambition to replace him but failed. “Today, the deputy governor who came with us on the same ticket is no longer with us. Nobody offended him. In fact, I have not even seen his resignation letter, what concerns me with it?,” Yusuf said. “Whatever made him act that way was an attempt to remove me and take the position, but God did not allow it.” He also questioned Abdussalam’s treatment within the Kwankwasiyya political camp, asking why he was not given the opportunity he allegedly sought.
Yusuf also defended his recent exit from the New Nigeria Peoples Party, dismissing accusations of betrayal and insisting his decision was in the best interest of Kano residents. According to him, members of the Kwankwasiyya movement were not consulted before key decisions were taken within the party, raising concerns about internal democracy. He added that warnings about the party’s direction were ignored, and his eventual departure was necessary to prevent uncertainty in the state, noting that recent developments had validated his concerns.
