An elderly Islamic cleric, Ladan Zubairu, was killed on Monday morning at Yusuf Garko Mosque in the Maraba Quarters area of Kano State, according to a report from PUNCH. The assailant was later lynched by an angry mob, while his residence was set on fire, causing panic before security operatives restored calm in the area.
The deceased’s son, Isa Kasim, said his father had gone out at dawn to call Muslims to prayer. “He had just finished the first call and was seated when someone entered the mosque with a weapon, grabbed him and slaughtered him. In short, his throat was slit,” Kasim said, adding that youths later tracked down and killed the attacker.
Confirming the incident, Kano police spokesperson, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said officers intervened to prevent further violence. “Our officers quickly intervened to restore calm and prevent further escalation. Normalcy has now returned to Maraba Quarters,” he said, noting that the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, ordered a full investigation.
