Inmates receive NOUN university degrees inside Abuja prison

The National Open University of Nigeria has awarded degree certificates to six inmates at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kuje, Abuja. The graduates earned qualifications including master’s and bachelor’s degrees in disciplines such as peace studies, political science, and criminology. The Nigeria Correctional Service commended the inmates for their resilience.

Controller General Sylvester Nwakuche, represented by deputy Amos Kupan, stated education transforms lives and demonstrates incarceration is “an opportunity for growth.” He said, “The service will continue to foster skills and educational opportunities that prepare inmates for lawful livelihoods and a better future after release.”

Representing NOUN, director Francis Enobore thanked the correctional service for the 13-year partnership, describing the programme as a pathway of hope. Graduate representative Abba Kyari expressed gratitude, noting the learning restored their sense of purpose and that their time in custody was not wasted.
