A Nigerian soldier, identified as Corporal Irabo, was shot dead by gunmen wearing military uniforms at a checkpoint in Edo State while returning to Abuja after the expiration of his pass. The incident occurred on Tuesday when the vehicle conveying him was stopped by armed men suspected to be impostors.
A security source said the attackers asked passengers to identify themselves. Believing they were genuine colleagues, the soldier identified himself and was shot at close range. “The soldier was on his way back to his unit in Abuja after the expiration of his pass,” the source said.
The gunmen reportedly fled after the shooting, leaving the soldier dead at the scene. The killing has heightened concerns over fake checkpoints and the misuse of military uniforms by criminals. As of filing this report, there was no official statement from the Nigerian Army or the Edo State Police Command.
