Governor Sanwo-Olu visits fire-ravaged Lagos high-rise building

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has visited the scene of a major fire that destroyed the 22-storey Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) House on Martins Street, Lagos Island. The blaze began around 5 p.m. on Christmas Eve from the fourth floor and spread across multiple levels. โ€œMr Governor is at the scene for an on-the-spot assessment,โ€ his media aide, Gboyega Akosile, said.

Firefighters and emergency agencies, including LASEMA, the Federal Fire Service, and LASEMAโ€™s Marine Unit, battled the inferno for over 10 hours, containing flames into Christmas morning. The fire affected nearby structures including the seven-storey Radio Nigeria building, Oluwole Plaza, a mosque, and adjoining buildings. Footage showed the governor walking through debris-filled streets with responders.

LASEMA confirmed the fire was contained with injured victims receiving immediate care. โ€œSeven adult males suffered varying degrees of burn injuriesโ€ฆ and were attended to by paramedics before being taken to nearby hospitals,โ€ spokesman Nosa Okunbor said. Five others were treated for smoke inhalation. The seven-storey Radio Nigeria building has been extinguished, with dampening-down operations continuing.
