The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has revealed that global aircraft delivery shortfalls have reached 5,300 units, with an order backlog exceeding 17,000 aircraft, nearly 60% of the active fleet. IATA warned that accumulated losses over the past five years could sustain supply pressures until 2034. “Airlines are feeling the impact of the aerospace supply chain challenges across their business,” said IATA Director General Willie Walsh.
IATA cited multiple causes, including slower engine production, extended certification timelines, trade tariffs, and a shortage of skilled labour. To ease bottlenecks, the association urged improved supply chain visibility, alternative sourcing, expanded maintenance capacity, and adoption of advanced manufacturing. “No effort should be spared to accelerate solutions before the impact becomes even more acute,” Walsh added.
