The Federal Government, through the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), has expressed grief over the deaths of two Nigerian citizens killed in separate violent incidents in the United Kingdom and Canada. NiDCOM Chairman/CEO, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, speaking via Head of Media and Public Relations, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, described both incidents as “shocking and deeply troubling,” and extended condolences to the victims’ families. She stated that “NiDCOM will work closely with the Nigerian High Commissions in the UK and Canada to provide the necessary support to the affected families, in line with the Commission’s mandate”.

The victims were identified as John Temitope Onetufo, 23, who was stabbed to death on New Year’s Eve in Lewisham, London, and Osemwengie Irorere, 46, who was shot dead at the Yorkdale GO Bus Terminal in Toronto on January 4, 2026. Dabiri-Erewa commended the UK Metropolitan Police and the Toronto Police Service for their swift response, and called for transparent investigations to ensure justice. “NiDCOM will work closely with the Nigerian High Commissions in the UK and Canada to provide the necessary support to the affected families,” she added, urging authorities to complete probes without delay.
