Attorney General of the Federation Lateef Fagbemi says Nigeria’s insecurity situation is not as “heinous” as portrayed, following a closed-door meeting with a visiting U.S. delegation. During a press conference, the minister said the engagement allowed the federal government to present its position on terrorism. “We have security challenges, and the government is doing its utmost best to ensure that these challenges are addressed,” he stated.
Fagbemi said his ministry follows due process in prosecuting terrorism-related cases, noting that between 2017 and 2025, authorities secured 860 convictions and 891 discharges. He added that courts’ decisions are fully obeyed. “Those who have nothing to do with it are let off the hook… it is for the court to decide,” he said. His comments follow U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent designation of Nigeria as a “country of particular concern.”
