Former Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has again rejected claims of a massacre at the Lekki Toll Gate during the 2020 EndSARS protests, insisting the narrative was driven by social media misinformation.
Speaking on ARISE News about his book Headlines and Soundbites, Mohammed said, “EndSARS was unfortunate, it was tragic, but that there was a massacre at the tollgate is fake news.” He argued no family has reported a missing relative linked to the incident in five years.
Mohammed criticised CNN’s coverage as “second-hand information” and defended the Buhari administration’s stance on regulating social media, including Twitter’s 2021 suspension. Acknowledging that deaths occurred in various states during EndSARS, he maintained that evidence does not support claims of a mass killing at Lekki.
The October 20, 2020 toll gate shooting remains a central point of national and international debate over police conduct and government accountability.
