Former attorney-general of the federation, Abubakar Malami, spent Monday night at the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission as part of an expanding probe into his financial dealings. According to an associate, he arrived late for questioning and was asked to remain overnight. Investigators are examining 46 bank accounts allegedly linked to him, and he is expected to report to the EFCC daily as inquiries continue.
The probe builds on earlier EFCC inquiries into several high-value transactions during Malami’s tenure, including the $496 million payment to Global Steel Holdings Ltd and issues surrounding asset sales forfeited to the EFCC. Other matters under scrutiny include the Paris Club refund judgment debt, the Sunrise Power settlement, and duplicated legal fees from the Abacha loot transfer. Malami, who recently joined the ADC, has declared interest in the 2027 Kebbi governorship race.
