DMX to receive ministerial ordination nearly five years after his death

Earl Simmons, popularly known as DMX, is set to be posthumously ordained as a Christian minister nearly five years after his death in April 2021. Best known for his gravelly voice, raw lyricism and five consecutive No. 1 albums, DMX sold more than 75 million records worldwide. Beyond his music, he was widely regarded for his public expressions of faith, often leading prayers at concerts and speaking openly about his struggles with God, a spiritual journey that resonated deeply with millions of fans.

According to Complex, the ordination will take place during a special service at the historic Foster Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church, a 164-year-old landmark once known as “Freedom Church” for its role in the Underground Railroad during the Civil War era. The ceremony is being organized by the Gospel Cultural Center, which said it is honoring DMX for his lasting cultural, musical and spiritual influence, recognizing his role in blending hip-hop with overt expressions of Christian faith.
