Former First Lady Aisha Buhari has disclosed that her late husband, President Muhammadu Buhari, began locking his bedroom door after believing Aso Rock gossip that she planned to kill him. Her account is in a new biography launched on Monday. She stated the 2017 health crisis, leading to 154 days of medical leave, began with a broken feeding routine.
According to the book, Aisha had long managed a strict regimen of meals and supplements for the President. “Daily, cups and bowls with tailored vitamin powders and oils,” the plan was explained to staff. This routine frayed following the gossip. “Then came the gossip and the fearmongering. They said I wanted to kill him,” the book quotes.
“My husband believed them for a week or so,” she revealed. This led to delayed meals and stopped supplements. “For a year, he did not have lunch. They mismanaged his meals,” Aisha added. She contends this mismanaged nutrition, not a mysterious ailment or poisoning, was the genesis of the crisis.
The deterioration culminated in Buhari’s extended UK hospital trips. Upon return, Aisha took charge, secretly adding hospital-prescribed supplements to his food. “After just three days, he threw away the stick he was walking with,” noting a swift turnaround. The book also addresses rumours, with Aisha refuting the “Jibril of Sudan” body double theory as absurd.
Author Dr. Charles Omole notes the absences sparked rumours but highlighted Buhari’s habit of ceding power ensured institutional propriety. The biography also reveals Aisha’s allegations of surveillance and bugging in the Villa, which she said contributed to a climate of fear.
