Awujale: Ogun steps in as 60 candidates express interest

The Ogun State government has intervened in the selection process for the next Awujale of Ijebuland, leading the Fusengbuwa Ruling House to postpone its planned nomination meeting. Originally scheduled for Monday, the meeting was halted to allow for a Tuesday session with state officials aimed at reviewing procedural compliance. Authorities intend to ensure the transition adheres strictly to existing laws to prevent future legal disputes over the vacant stool.

Chairman of the ruling house, Abdulateef Owoyemi, clarified that the delay was a proactive measure to “cross our Ts and dot our Is” regarding legal standards. He dismissed rumors that the postponement was related to any specific individual’s eligibility, stating, “The meeting is to ensure that everything is done correctly so that the selection process does not become a fertile ground for litigation or generate legal controversy.”

Interest in the throne has surged, with Vice Chairman Prof. Fassy Yusuf confirming that at least 60 candidates are currently vying for the position. The ruling house is under a 14-day local government mandate to submit nominees following the passing of Oba Sikiru Adetona. Regarding the high volume of interest, Yusuf noted, “So far, about 60 people are in the race to become the next Awujale.”
