A massive “Save Democracy” protest hit the streets of Abuja on Wednesday as prominent opposition leaders including Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, and Rabiu Kwankwaso led thousands of demonstrators to the INEC headquarters to demand the resignation of Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan.

Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, was brought to a near standstill on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, as thousands of Nigerians flooded the streets for the “Save Democracy” protest. Demonstrators, many of whom were clad in “Operation Save Our Democracy” T-shirts, marched to the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The protesters carried red and white placards and chanted “We no go gree,” expressing deep dissatisfaction with the current electoral trajectory under the leadership of Prof. Joash Amupitan, who was sworn in as INEC Chairman in October 2025. The energetic crowd focused their ire on the Commission’s leadership, with loud chants of “INEC Chairman Amupitan must go” echoing through the Maitama district.

The protest gained significant political weight as a rare coalition of opposition heavyweights, including the 2023 presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar; the Labour Party, Peter Obi; and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, converged to lead the march. The leaders, alongside former Senate President David Mark and prominent activists like Aisha Yesufu and “Mama Pee,” were seen at the Maitama Roundabout gearing up to lead the procession to the INEC office. This united front follows months of internal crises within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and broader concerns among the opposition that the country may be drifting toward a “one-party system” ahead of the 2027 general elections.

As the protesters reached the INEC office, security personnel maintained a heavy presence to prevent a breach of the facility. The demonstration was fueled by recent legislative debates over the removal of “real-time” electronic transmission clauses from the Electoral Act and unresolved disputes within the ADC leadership. Activists at the scene argued that the integrity of the 2027 polls is already being compromised, necessitating urgent reforms and the immediate removal of the current INEC leadership. “We are here to ensure that the will of the people is never subverted again,” one supporter of the Peter Obi-led “Obidient” movement stated. As of Wednesday afternoon, the Commission has not issued an official response to the demonstrators’ demands.
