Anthony Joshua associates’ deaths: SUV driver appears in court, gets ₦5m bail

The Ogun State Police Command has arraigned Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, the driver of a Lexus SUV involved in a fatal crash along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway that killed two close associates of former world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua. The driver, identified as Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, was charged on Friday before a Sagamu Magistrate Court, facing counts including dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care causing bodily harm, property damage, and operating a vehicle without a valid National Driver’s Licence. The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the arraignment, stating that the offences contravene Sections 5(1), 6(1), 7(1), and 10(1) of the Federal Highway Act, Cap F:135, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004. The police earlier clarified that Joshua was a passenger in the convoy and not a suspect nor the driver, following viral social media claims linking him directly to the case.

The court granted the defendant bail in the sum of ₦5 million with two sureties, but ordered his remand in custody pending fulfilment of the bail conditions. The matter was adjourned to January 20, 2026, for further proceedings. Police findings show the collision occurred on Monday when the SUV swerved into a stationary truck, resulting in the deaths of Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami at the scene, while Joshua and Kayode sustained minor injuries. Joshua was discharged from hospital on Wednesday after being certified clinically fit for home recovery, and on Thursday, he and his mother reportedly visited a funeral home in Lagos to pay their final respects as arrangements were made for the repatriation of the victims’ bodies. In a statement from Abeokuta on January 2, 2026, DSP Babaseyi assured the public that the investigation had been concluded and that the case would be diligently prosecuted in line with the law.
