Nigeria’s national grid fails again, electricity output plummets nationwide

Nigeria’s national electricity grid suffered another significant collapse on Monday afternoon, leaving the majority of the country with near-zero power supply. Data released at approximately 3:12 pm on December 29, 2025, indicated that electricity reaching consumers had plummeted to minimal levels, with only the Ibadan and Abuja Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) receiving 30 megawatts (MW) and 20 MW respectively. This latest failure underscores the recurring instability of the nation’s aging power infrastructure, which has faced multiple system disturbances throughout the year.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and various distribution firms have already begun efforts to stabilize the network and restore service to millions of affected households and businesses. In past incidents, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has emphasized its collaboration with stakeholders, stating, “Rest assured, we are working closely with the relevant shareholders to ensure power is restored once the grid is stabilized.” Despite these assurances, the frequent breakdowns continue to spark public frustration as the energy sector struggles with gas supply constraints and technical vulnerabilities.
