A review of Nigeria’s 2026 budget by SaharaReporters has shown that the Bola Tinubu administration plans to spend about N3.3 billion on the purchase and replacement of vehicles for the Presidency. The budget proposal allocates N2.5 billion for the procurement of State House operational vehicles, alongside N758 million specifically set aside for the replacement of sport utility vehicles (SUVs).
In addition, the budget earmarks N115 million for the purchase of tyres for bullet-proof vehicles, plain cars, CCU vehicles, platform trucks, SUVs, ambulances and other operational and utility vehicles. Attempts to compare the allocation with the Presidency’s tyre expenditure in 2025 were unsuccessful due to the absence of comprehensive spending data for that year. However, budget documents show that in 2025, the Presidency allocated N3.6 billion for operational vehicles and an additional N1 billion for SUV replacement at the State House.
The continued spending on vehicles and related items has attracted attention amid calls for greater fiscal restraint. A 2024 review of the Govspend public payments portal by SaharaReporters revealed substantial tyre-related expenditures by the Tinubu Presidency, including N366 million spent over three separate days. Records show that N42.8 million was spent on State House tyres on June 22, 2023, followed by another N86.2 million on June 24, 2023, with the transactions described as purchases of tyres for State House operations.
