Yorùbá, Hausa now available on Google AI search

Google has expanded its AI-powered search capabilities to include Yorùbá and Hausa, bringing the total number of supported African languages to 13 and significantly enhancing digital accessibility for millions of Nigerians.

Google has announced a major update to its artificial intelligence-powered search tools, officially adding Yorùbá and Hausa to its list of supported languages. This expansion allows users in Nigeria and across West Africa to interact with “AI Overviews” and “AI Mode” in their native tongues, receiving conversational responses and quick summaries to complex queries. By integrating two of Nigeria’s most widely spoken languages, the tech giant aims to democratize access to information for diverse demographics, ranging from students conducting research in Hausa to traders seeking business advice in Yorùbá through text or voice commands.

The initiative is part of a broader strategic push to make advanced digital services more locally relevant across the African continent. With this latest update, Google now supports 13 African languages, including Afrikaans, Amharic, Kiswahili, and isiZulu. Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Google’s Communications and Public Affairs Manager for West Africa, emphasized that the move is designed to ensure AI tools reflect local culture and nuances. He noted that enabling Nigerians to interact with search in their primary languages makes online information more accessible and useful for everyday decision-making and education.

Beyond simple translation, Google stated that the integration utilizes a custom version of its Gemini model to provide a sophisticated understanding of local contexts. The company believes that multimodal and reasoning capabilities are essential for a truly global search experience. “Building a truly global Search goes far beyond translation, it requires a nuanced understanding of local information. With the advanced multimodal and reasoning capabilities of our custom version of Gemini in Search, we’ve made huge strides in language understanding, so our most advanced AI search capabilities are locally relevant and useful in each new language we support,” the company stated.
