Iran’s participation at the 2026 FIFA World Cup is in doubt amid escalating tensions with the United States and Israel, raising fresh uncertainty over the country’s ability to compete in the tournament.
A cloud of uncertainty is hanging over Iran’s involvement in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following escalating military tensions involving the United States and Israel. President of the Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran, Mehdi Taj, disclosed that the country’s participation in the tournament is now in serious doubt amid the worsening crisis.
Speaking to Iranian sports outlet Varzesh3, Taj admitted that recent attacks and the tense political climate have made it difficult for the national team to prepare with confidence or optimism for the global showpiece. According to him, after the bombardments and widening conflict, it is hard to expect players, officials and supporters to look forward to competing in the United States under normal circumstances. Iran has already been drawn in Group G of the tournament and is scheduled to play its group matches in Los Angeles and Seattle.
The competition will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19 under the supervision of FIFA. However, the worsening diplomatic standoff between Washington and Tehran, alongside previous travel restrictions on Iranian citizens, has heightened concerns over visa approvals, security considerations and broader political implications that could affect the team’s ability to enter the United States and fulfil its fixtures
