Woman dies after falling into 170ft well at Lagos building site

A woman has died after falling into a 170-foot well at a Lagos construction site. Authorities recovered her body days later following a coordinated emergency operation.

A woman has died after falling into a 170-foot well at a construction site in Ijegun, Lagos. Her body was recovered on July 10 following a coordinated rescue effort led by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.

According to the agency’s spokesperson, Maria Fadairo, the incident occurred on June 30 at a one-storey building under construction on Abuba Anthony Street. Responders from the Ejigbo Fire Station were alerted at 7:34 p.m.

The woman, whose identity remains unknown, reportedly fell into the uncovered well located in front of the building. The challenging retrieval required support from the Nigeria Police, LASAMBUS, SEHMU, and other responders.

“The victim was recovered dead and handed over to SEHMU, while the police observed proceedings,” the statement said.

Fire service director Margaret Adeseye condoled with the family and condemned the lack of safety measures. “A 170-foot uncovered well is a severe hazard,” she said.

The Lagos SCID has taken over the investigation into the incident.
