An American travel content creator, Chris Joondeph, has lamented the impact of a newly signed United States presidential travel ban, saying American citizens and their foreign spouses are now trapped in a legal limbo. Joondeph, who is married to a Nigerian woman, shared his concerns in an Instagram post following the Proclamation signed on Tuesday by President Donald Trump.
The Proclamation expands travel restrictions on countries considered high-risk due to โdemonstrated, persistent, and severe deficiencies in screening, vetting, and information-sharing.โ Nigeria is among 15 additional countries placed under partial restrictions, alongside existing limitations on nationals from several other countries.
Joondeph said the policy has left his wife, Adenike, with โno pathโ to enter the United States despite their ongoing visa process. โIt is now extremely unlikely that my wife will be able to visit the United States anytime soonโฆ with the new presidential travel ban, she currently has no path to come to the United States,โ he said, adding that they have been waiting for her visa interview since May 2024.
He explained that while earlier travel bans focused mainly on non-immigrant visas, the new Proclamation also affects immigrant visas for spouses and children. โAs of the presidential proclamation yesterday, the U.S. will no longer issue immigrant visas to Nigerian spouses,โ Joondeph said, noting that many Americans underestimate how long and difficult the legal reunification process can be.
