US reviews Tanzania ties over post-election repression

The U.S. government is reviewing its partnership with Tanzania, citing concerns over repression of religious freedom, free speech, obstacles to U.S. investment, and “disturbing violence against civilians” surrounding the October 29 elections. State Department spokesperson Thomas Pigott stated these actions endanger U.S. interests and citizens.

This comes as the European Parliament condemned post-election killings and the detention of opposition leader Tundu Lissu. Separately, lawyers and activists have petitioned the International Criminal Court to investigate President Samia Suluhu for alleged crimes against humanity, including summary executions and disappearances.
