UN Secretary-General António Guterres declared the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife by U.S. special forces “a dangerous precedent,” expressing he is “deeply alarmed by the recent escalation.” The statement, delivered by spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, warned the action has “potential worrying implications for the region” and stressed the importance of “full respect – by all – of international law, including the UN Charter.”
The condemnation follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement on Truth Social that “The United States of America has successfully carried out a large scale strike against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolas Maduro, who has been, along with his wife, captured and flown out of the Country.” U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi stated Maduro would face “the full wrath of American justice on American soil, in American courts.” Venezuela has denounced the act of “extremely serious military aggression” and requested an emergency UN Security Council meeting.
