FAAN officials have arrested two travellers at the Lagos airport after they were caught with undeclared foreign currency totalling £53,415 and $6.1 million, later handed to the EFCC for investigation.
Operatives of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) have arrested two travellers, Mamud Nasidi and Yahaya Nasidi, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, for allegedly failing to declare £53,415 and $6,180,000 in their possession.
The duo, said to be security operatives, were apprehended on Saturday at the airport’s domestic wing while attempting to board an Abuja-bound Aero Contractors flight.
According to reports, they had evaded initial checks under the guise of escorting a suspect with the cash as exhibits but failed to follow approved procedures.
FAAN officials became suspicious after the pair attempted to board with boxes exceeding cabin luggage limits.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) confirmed that the suspects were detained by FAAN and later handed over by the Department of State Services (DSS) for investigation.
“Also found on the suspects are three mobile phones,” the EFCC said, adding that investigations are ongoing.
