Trump to expand travel ban to 30+ countries

President Donald Trump is set to extend the US travel ban to more than 30 countries following a shooting in Washington, DC, involving a former Afghan army member that killed one National Guard soldier.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said the move expands restrictions announced in June affecting 19 countries. “I won’t be specific on the number, but it’s over 30,” she said, adding the list remains under review.

Noem argued countries without stable governments or reliable vetting systems should be barred from sending travelers to the US. “If they don’t have a stable government there… why should we allow people from that country to come here to the United States?” she said.

Authorities said suspect Rahmanullah Lakanwal, who arrived from Afghanistan in 2021 and was granted asylum in April, now faces first-degree murder charges.
