Pro-Trump podcaster Stephen K. Bannon asserted in a new interview that “there is a plan” to circumvent the 22nd Amendment and allow President Trump to run for a third term, amplifying months of the President’s own public musings about defying the constitutional two-term limit.
Stephen K. Bannon, the pro-Trump podcaster and convicted fraudster who once served as White House chief strategist, has publicly backed President Trump’s talk of seeking a third term, despite the constitutional two-term limit.
In an interview with The Economist, Mr. Bannon vaguely asserted that there was “a plan” to circumvent the 22nd Amendment, which limits a president to two terms. “Trump is going to be president in ’28, and people ought to just get accommodated with that,” he said, adding he was part of a team developing the strategy.
He refused to elaborate, only stating, “At the appropriate time, we’ll lay out what the plan is. But there is a plan.”
The statement comes after months of President Trump publicly toying with the idea, insisting he is “not joking” about defying the limit. While some Republican leaders dismiss it as a joke, analysts suggest the musings may be a way for Mr. Trump to avoid being seen as a lame-duck president. Mr. Bannon, known as a provocateur, maintains considerable influence among the far right.
