Trump seeks to “test out” Putin amid European pushback on Ukraine concessions

We’re going to see what he has in mind and if it’s a fair deal, I’ll reveal it to the European Union leaders and to NATO leaders and also to President Zelensky.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday described his upcoming summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin as a “feel-out meeting” aimed at gauging the Russian leader’s intentions for ending the war in Ukraine. Trump invited Putin to Alaska for a face-to-face meeting scheduled for Friday—the first between the two since the conflict began in February 2022 .

Despite his reputation as a deal-maker, Trump tempered expectations, calling the meeting preliminary. “This is really a feel-out meeting a little bit,” he told reporters. “We’re going to see what he has in mind and if it’s a fair deal, I’ll reveal it to the European Union leaders and to NATO leaders and also to President Zelensky,” he added .

Trump also reiterated his stance on territorial adjustments, saying, “There’ll be some swapping, there’ll be some changes in land.” He said, however, that any such swap would accompany a demand to “end this war” .

European leaders have responded cautiously, planning separate discussions with both Zelensky and Trump to uphold Kyiv’s interests. They emphasized that a “just and lasting peace” must “respect international law, including the principles of independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and that international borders must not be changed by force” .
