Donald Trump rejected the idea of running as vice president to bypass constitutional limits, but said he “would love to do it” and declined to rule out a 2028 presidential bid.
In an exchange with reporters aboard Air Force One, President Trump said he would not run as vice president in 2028, calling the idea “too cute” and suggesting “the people wouldn’t like that. It’s too cute. It wouldn’t be right.”
Still, Trump also reiterated interest in another presidential campaign, saying “I would love to do it. I have my best numbers ever.” Pressed on whether he was ruling out a third term outright, he responded, “Am I not ruling it out? I mean you’ll have to tell me.”
Trump’s remarks come amid confusion over the 22nd Amendment, which bars a person from being elected to the presidency more than twice. Some legal observers have speculated about alternate pathways, including serving as vice president then ascending, though Trump dismissed that possibility.
When asked about potential running mates, Trump praised Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, calling them a ticket that “would be unstoppable.”
