Trump considers reclassifying marijuana as less dangerous drug – Report

The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the discussion marked one of Trump’s clearest indications that he might seek to ease federal restrictions on cannabis if elected again.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump is considering reclassifying marijuana as a less dangerous drug, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday, citing sources familiar with the matter.

According to the report, Trump expressed interest in the move during a $1 million-a-plate fundraiser held earlier this month at his New Jersey golf club.

Guests included Kim Rivers, CEO of Trulieve, one of the largest marijuana companies in the United States. Rivers reportedly urged Trump to support reclassification and expand medical marijuana research.

The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the discussion marked one of Trump’s clearest indications that he might seek to ease federal restrictions on cannabis if elected again.

Currently, marijuana is classified as a Schedule I drug under U.S. federal law, alongside substances like heroin, making research and banking for cannabis businesses difficult.

Industry leaders have long pushed for a downgrade, arguing it could open the door for broader medical use and potential federal legalization.
