Trump admin asks Supreme Court to end Venezuelan deportation amnesty

The Trump administration asked the Supreme Court to end deportation protections for Venezuelans, challenging rulings that blocked its move to terminate TPS.

The Trump administration has asked the Supreme Court to overturn a lower court order requiring it to maintain deportation protections for Venezuelan migrants. Solicitor General D. John Sauer said Friday that Judge Edward Chen’s ruling “disregarded” the high court’s earlier stay, which found the government was likely to prevail. “The district court’s new order expressly rests on the same flawed legal grounds as its predecessor — the one this court stayed,” Sauer said. More than 300,000 Venezuelans currently benefit from Temporary Protected Status (TPS), which allows them to work and avoid deportation.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has sought to end the designation, calling it unsustainable amid rising illegal migration. Immigration advocates argue the decision is racially motivated, a view upheld by Judge Chen and the 9th Circuit.

Also Friday, Ms. Noem ended TPS for Syrians, citing improved conditions and national security concerns. “TPS is meant to be temporary,” said Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin.
