President Trump accused the UN of “triple sabotage” after an escalator stalled, his teleprompter failed, and sound cut out during his General Assembly visit.
UNITED NATIONS — U.S. President Donald Trump has accused the United Nations of “triple sabotage” after a series of awkward mishaps marred his visit to the General Assembly in New York on Tuesday.
Footage showed Trump and First Lady Melania stepping onto an escalator that suddenly ground to a halt, forcing them to clutch the handrails to avoid stumbling. “It was only that we were each holding the handrail tightly or, it would have been a disaster,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, claiming UN staff had earlier joked about turning off elevators.
When he later took the stage, Trump was confronted with a dead teleprompter. “It was stone cold dark… What kind of place is this?” he fumed, before continuing his address without it. He added that his frustrations deepened when he was told afterward that sound in the hall had failed, preventing many leaders from hearing him.
Calling the incidents “sinister events,” Trump demanded an investigation and said those responsible “should be arrested.”
Despite the glitches, Trump used his speech to tout his administration’s achievements, denounce climate change as a “con job,” and accuse the UN of failing to deliver peace.
