Travel expert issues passport warning for families traveling with kids this summer

Simon Hood, executive director at John Mason International, urged parents to double-check passport expiry dates and appearance matches before flying.

A travel expert has issued a critical passport warning to UK families planning to travel abroad this summer.

Simon Hood, executive director at John Mason International, urged parents to double-check passport expiry dates and appearance matches before flying.

“The most important rule revolves around the differences between children and adult passport validity,” Hood said. “Children’s passports are valid for five years, versus the adult ten years – so if in doubt, check the expiry date because the last thing you’d want is to turn up to the airport to find your children aren’t able to leave the UK.”

He also stressed that children’s appearances can change quickly, potentially leading to issues if they no longer resemble their passport photo. “Be honest and question whether you need to renew your children’s passports ahead of summer flights,” Hood advised.

Post-Brexit travel rules and stricter entry requirements mean many UK travellers risk being turned away if their passports aren’t up to standard.
