Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong says the team’s training boycott was over unpaid allowances, not demands for increased bonuses.
Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has dismissed claims that the team is boycotting training over demands for a special World Cup bonus.
According to a report from THECABLE, Ekong clarified in a tweet on Tuesday that the players’ protest was strictly about unpaid allowances and bonuses owed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
The captain explained that the squad, including officials, refused to participate in their scheduled Tuesday evening training session in Rabat, Morocco, to draw attention to their grievances.
TheCable further reported that the players are yet to receive payments for qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the 2026 World Cup playoff, while some senior players are owed bonuses dating back to 2019.
“All the players want is a quick resolution so we can focus on the big games ahead,” Ekong stated.
Nigeria is scheduled to face Gabon on Thursday in the semi-final of the 2026 African World Cup playoffs, with the winner expected to meet either Congo DR or Cameroon in the final for a place in the intercontinental playoff.
