Traditional rulers in Kebbi barred from conferring titles without state clearance

The Kebbi State Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs has issued a directive suspending all traditional rulers from conferring chieftaincy titles without prior written approval from the ministry. The order, contained in a circular signed by Deputy Director of Administration Abubakar Mansur-Tuga, mandates the immediate reversal of any titles awarded without due process in the last two months, stating the measure aims to “restore order and preserve the dignity of traditional institutions.”

The ministry stated the decision followed numerous complaints about the indiscriminate award of titles in violation of established guidelines. The circular emphasised that future conferments must “uphold the integrity, dignity and long-standing traditions associated with such honours,” and stressed that “no title should be granted under any circumstances without clearance from the ministry, in line with ongoing reforms.”
