President Bola Tinubu has drawn public attention and criticism from Nigerians after sharing an AI-generated image depicting him having lunch with Rwandan President Paul Kagame. The image, which carried a visible Grok watermark, was posted on Tinubu’s verified X account on Sunday and tagged President Kagame. In the post, Tinubu stated that the private lunch focused on discussions about global affairs and advancing Africa’s interests in a rapidly changing international environment.
The development sparked reactions online after users identified the Grok watermark on the image, raising questions about why an artificial intelligence–generated photo was used to illustrate the purported engagement. The State House had earlier announced on December 28 that the president had travelled to Europe to continue his year-end holiday ahead of his participation in the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week. Several of Tinubu’s aides also shared the same image on their respective X handles with varying captions, further fuelling public debate over the authenticity of the photograph and the decision to use an AI-generated image for a presidential engagement.
