President Bola Tinubu has awarded Nigeria’s D’Tigress players $100,000 each, national honours, and housing for their historic AfroBasket win.

President Bola Tinubu has honoured Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, with $100,000 each, three-bedroom flats at Renewed Hope Estate, and national honours (OON) following their fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket victory. The coaching and technical crew each received $50,000 and similar housing and honours.

The announcement was made by Vice President Kashim Shettima during a state reception at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday.

“You have brought great pride to Nigeria,” Shettima said. “You wore the green and white not just as clothes, but as a symbol of unity.”

D’Tigress defeated Mali 78–64 in the final in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, extending their unbeaten AfroBasket streak to 29 games.

Coach Rena Wakama was praised for her historic leadership, and Amy Okonkwo and Ezinne Kalu were applauded for their individual brilliance.

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu described the team as “ambassadors of a great nation,” while Sports Commission Chair Shehu Dikko called the win “a defining moment for Nigerian women’s sports.”
