Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), marking his sixth party switch in 38 years as he launches a renewed bid to unseat the APC in 2027.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially joined the African Democratic Congress, ADC—his sixth political platform in 38 years—framing the move as “the beginning of moves marking a decisive national rescue mission aimed at ending the misrule of the All Progressives Congress, APC.”
Atiku, who turns 81 in 2027, said his ADC registration represents a strategic realignment to unseat the ruling party, urging Nigerians to join “a national vanguard” for stability and good governance.
His defection reignited criticisms from APC’s Adams Oshiomhole, who argued that Atiku “could not fix the PDP,” prompting a sharp response from Atiku’s camp accusing Oshiomhole of “weaponizing noise to mask the catastrophic failures” of the APC.
The development has revived debate over Atiku’s decades-long political journey—from SDP to PDP, AC, APC, and now ADC—and whether his latest move positions him any closer to achieving his long-held presidential ambition.
